In late February or March, remove weak and dead wood and prune lightly, spacing stems so that next year's blooms can open well. In spring, apply balanced fertilizer according to package directions. Check soil weekly for moisture. Water thoroughly when dry. Place 2-3" of mulch around bottom of plant in spring to keep roots cool in summer. Increase mulch layer to 4-6" to protect the roots for the coming winter. Mulch layer from fall will protect the roots during winter. Use on trellis or other structure suitable to support the vine; plant width is determined by the width of the trellis.
