In spring, apply balanced fertilizer for acid-loving plants according to package directions. Check soil weekly for moisture. Water thoroughly when dry. Adequate water until the ground freezes is necessary to sustain plant during the winter. Prune annually in early spring before new growth begins. Cut a few inches below the old flower spikes. Apply 2-3" of mulch around plant in summer to preserve moisture and keep the roots cool. Maintain 2-3" mulch layer to avoid frost heaving of plant in winter. Mulch layer will provide protection for roots for moisture retention. Susceptible to winter wind damage. Avoid northern and western exposures when planting.
